2008 Treadle On Birthday Bash TOGA
Seattle, Washington
April 30 - May 3, 2008
First Photos!!!
there have been some problems on my end, pulling this together, but we're finally there. Hopefully, this page will give you the information you need. Obviously, if there are questions, ask on list or direct to me and I'll try to fill out anything that is missing. However, this should take care of the big issues...
Dates and Times:
The dates are above. We will start at 12:00 noon on Wednesday at the church (see below) and be there until Friday afternoon. Friday evening is a bit open at this point. We can either see about bringing in pizza or arranging for a restaurant sit down meal. Saturday will be the traditional mob scene at Captain Dick's house, with all the pot luck food you can handle.
Location:
Main activity site will be St. Dunstan in the Highlands Episcopal Church. This is a beautiful church in a wooded glade setting. They have a service Wednesday morning (you're welcome to attend) and we have the lobby space from noon on to set up. We can leave our stuff overnight, but obviously need to clean up on Friday afternoon. There is easy access for getting treadles in. However, we will be on a nice slate floor or a hardwood floor, so be prepared with some kind of padding if you are using a treadle. We will not have kitchen priveleges but will have coffee and hot water for tea.
St. Dunstan's is located at 722 N 145th St, Shoreline, WA 98133. Here is a map:

Note especially Aurora Ave. The church is two short blocks off of Aurora. Aurora N. is a major north/south Seattle street. Most of the information I will be giving you will be related to Aurora Ave. N. Note that Aurora Ave. is also Higway 99.
Here are a few pix of St. Dunstan's:

Motels:
All of the motels I am referencing are on Aurora Ave. N, except for the Nexus, which is not far off of Aurora. Aurora is a busy major thoroughfare. It provides easy access to things, but the traffic is heavy. These hotels/motels range from very new and modern to older, cheaper and basic. Remember, the church is at 145th and Aurora... I'm going to start with the best places in terms of newness and security, and work down to the motels...
Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites - 14115 Aurora Ave N. 206-365-7777. (Reservations could also almost certainly be made on-line through Holiday Inn.) This is a really nice place, $90. it's very close to the church, 4 blocks south and on the same side of Aurora. It's a hotel rather than a motel, in construction.
Econo Lodge North - 14817 Aurora Ave. N.(206) 367-7880 (Reservations could also almost certanly be made on-line through Econo Lodge). This is another nice, new hotel, quite close to the church, just three blocks north. $90.
Hotel Nexus - 2140 N. Northgate Way (between Aurora and I-5 Expressway, close to the large Northgate Shopping Mall) 866-863-8368 This is a pretty fancy hotel... rooms are around #120 a night. Fine restaurant in front of the building. N. Northgate Way connects to Aurora, and also to the Northgate Shopping Mall. I'm including it here in case anyone wants a fancier place and/or would appreciate the shopping access to Northgate, though if you drive south from the church or any of the other hotels/motels, you just go to 105th and Aurora and turn left to get to Northgate... not a big deal.
Comfort Inn and Suites (was Evergreen Inn) - 13700 Aurora Ave. N. There is no 800 # direct, but they are a chain and make reservations via internet, supposedly at a reduced rate. The rate I was quoted when I checked it out was $80 per night. Local phone number is 206 361-3700. Looks to be a nice place with interior rooms.
Aurora Seafair Inn - 9100 Aurora Ave 1-800-445-9297 This is a modern, nice place, a bit far down Aurora, but newer and quite nice. Inside elevator but rooms do open outside.
Seattle Motor Inn - (used to be Black Angus Inn) - 125th and Aurora. Phone This is the motel that has been used by a number of our folks in the past. Reports are that it has gone downhill a bit. It's pretty basic, with outside opening rooms. There is a nice restaurant, the 125th St. Grill, on the premises, a Krispy Creme donut shop across the side street and a Subway across Aurora. There rates right now are $49 a night. In the past, some folks have had a good experience there, maybe because there were half a dozen or more there together, but others didn't care for it.
Note: There's no question the Holiday Inn Express and the Econo Lodge North are the closest to the church and are very acceptable places to stay. These would be my first recommendations unless cost is a serious factor.
Food Access:
There are numerous restaurants up and down Aurora Ave. There is a family Mexican place, Las Margueritas, on the corner of 145th and Aurora. There's a Taco Time at 142nd, across the street from the Holiday Inn Express. There is a nice "dinner" restaurant, the 125th St. Grill, at 125th St. (also a Krispy Kreme). There's a Subway at 125th and a Starbucks at 130th. Also an Outback Steakhouse at 130th.

The Stromberg Stash Project
As most attendees already know, we have been "gifted" with a very special project. The family of Lorraine Stromberg has asked if we would be willing to sort her extremely large fabric stash and arrange for its donation to appropriate charity quilting groups, and we have agreed to take this on. I have constructed a page for this activity.... it will be added to as we get some pictures of the stash after delivery and of our activity in sorting it. Here's a link:

I'm sorry... I tried to post a map here, but MapQuest refused to process one for my address. No idea why.. .just said "undefined parameter". Ah, well, here is a narrative set of directions from North or South:
Directions to Dick and Ann Wightman’s House at
10527 12th Ave. NW, Seattle, WA:
(Phone number and email address are below)
To get here, assuming you are on I-5 and coming from the South:
Take I-5 going North. Get off at the N. 85th St. exit, which is a right off.
It will cross over the freeway and head West. Proceed on N. 85th St. for a
long way. It will eventually become NW 85th St. Stay on it until you get to
15th Ave. NW, a major intersection. Turn right on 15th Ave. NW. Within a few
blocks it will swing to the right and become Holman Road. Stay on it for short
while, a dozen blocks or so, and you will see a large 1950's style hamburger
drive-in coming up on your right. It's called "Dick's Drive-in".
Be prepared to make a left turn as you get to it. Your turn is from Holman
onto 12th Ave. NW. There is a bi-directional middle turn lane. You will be
looking at a long downgrade on Holman. Make the left onto 12th Ave. NW, which
is a less than 90 degree turn and immediately goes up a short, steep grade,
then levels out. Proceed on 12th Ave. NW until you come to our house at 10527
12th Ave. NW. There will be one stop sign at NW 100th St. Be aware that the
other intersections are largely unmarked, though a few have yield signs. Our
house will be on your left. It is brick, up a slight rise, and will have either
or both of two cars in the driveway... a white Dodge Caravan with the license
"KITEGUY", or a small black Metro Geo. Phone number is below if
you need it.
To get here if you are coming on I-5 from the North:
Take I-5 South. Get off at Northgate Way exit. It is a right off. Turn right
onto Northgate Way. Follow Northgate Way around a couple of curves. It will
swing through a couple of curves, be 109th St NW for a short bit, and then
become 115th St. NW, but it is always obviously the main route. Just stay
on it. You will cross Aurora Ave. and Greenwood Ave. After Greenwood, the
street you are on will be called Holman Road. Stay on Holman Road and you
will climb a long hill. Very close to the top of this hill you will see a
1950's style hamburger drive-in ahead on your left. It is called "Dick's
Drive-In". You will want to make a very sharp right turn off of Holman
Road onto 12th Ave. NW just before you get to Dick's Drive-In. Not only is
the turn very sharp right, it immediately goes up a short, steep grade, then
levels out. Proceed on 12th Ave. NW until you come to our house at 10527 12th

To get here if you are coming from Downtown Seattle
(such as if you came in on a ferry from across the Sound):
From Downtown, take any of the North streets up to Denny Way. This could be
Western, First Ave. or Fourth Ave. At Denny Way, turn left (there are traffic
lights that will guide you.) From Western, you will be immediately routed
onto Elliott Ave. From First or Fourth, you will proceed a short way on Denny
Ave. and then be forced to swing right onto Elliott. Take Elliott Ave. North
and it will eventually swing and turn into 15th Ave. NW, crossing the Ballard
Bridge. Stay on 15th Ave. NW. You will cross Market Street, then NW 65th Street,
then NW 85th Street. After the intersection with NW 85th St., 15th Ave. NW,
will swing to the right and become Holman Road. Stay on it for short while,
a dozen blocks or so, and you will see a large 1950's style hamburger drive-in
coming up on your right. It's called "Dick's Drive-in". Be prepared
