Treadle On Mystery Quilt

Section Three

Well, you should now have half as many whole units as you started out with! Our next step is to assemble the pairs into four piece row units. WARNING! I don't know what it is about this step, but it is really, really easy to get confused. Work on one row unit at a time. Check frequently that what you are doing will produce what you want when you open it up. Keep the row units right side up, well separated and labeled. If you get them mixed together or some upside down, they will confuse the heck out of you! Ask me how I know· Also, count out your pieces· don't make so many of one kind you don't leave enough of a unit necessary for another kind.

Before you begin, take an A-C/SE unit and turn it around. You will see that it becomes a C/NW-A unit. Likewise, if you turn the A-C/NE unit around, it can become a C/SW-A unit. This is confusing, but important! You will be making row units using these pieces in each of these orientations.

You will be making four different kinds of strips. They are shown in the picture below.

Check the picture to be sure you understand each row unit before proceeding.

Row Unit 1: Join an A-C/SE unit to a BB unit. The strip should now read, square by square, left to right: A square, C/SE square, B square, B square. Make 48 of this unit.

Row Unit 2: Join an AB unit to a C/SW-A unit. Row should read, left to right: A square, B square, C/SW square, A square. Make 48 of this unit.

Row Unit 3: Join an AB unit to a C/NW-A unit. The strip should read, left to right: A square, B square, C/NW square, A square. Make 48 of this unit.

Row Unit 4: Join an A-C/NE unit to a BB unit. Row should read, square by square, left to right: A square, C/NE square, B square, B square. Make 48 of this unit.

Take a break· you've earned it!
