A Re-Creation of Some of the More Popular Features of Early Treadleonia
Treadleonia
The small, independent Principality of Treadleonia is an island nation that exists somewhere to west of Inspiration and just a little bit north of Reality. Its citizens consist of humans, sewing machines and teddy bears, all of whom interact freely in various formats. Time in Treadleonia is magically flexible. Treadle and hand crank machines ranging from 125 years old to brand new co-exist comfortably with users as young as 9 and as old as 90. The sewing projects, stories and social history that are shared come from current, living members, as well as from the memories and writings of those who, other than in spirit, are for the time being gone from us.
Please accept our invitation to settle down when you have some time in hand and enjoy a tour of Treadleonia. Don't be surprised if the time gets away from you; remember that time in Treadleonia is very flexible. Some folks decide to take a vacation there, and come back day after day to enjoy the full impact of this magical realm. It usually takes many visits to see it all. Some folks visit the Treadleonian Embassy, take out citizenship, and stay·
Your Host and Self-Elected Despotic Leader of Treadleonia
Captain Dick
Treadle On, Traveler, and Boldly Go!
Adventure awaits, for those brave of heart,
Who're willing to venture to strange foreign parts.
Study the map, laid out down below,
Plan out your trip· then boldly go!
Aye, there's danger and risk, but the brave don't complain;
They think of the knowledge that they stand to gain.
There are books, and instructions o'er which you can pore,
About treadles and hand cranks· long forgotten lore!
You will find a warm welcome from those who live here.
They'll help with those things that you might think to fear.
So stand by your "list family" and your Treadleonian Oath.
If you'd seek knowledge and friendship, here you'll find both!
At this point you can decide upon your character. Wimp Tourists, the sort who would never think of drinking the local water, can go carefully to The Embassy and The Library to begin learning a bit about Treadleonia before venturing too far into things.
Adventurous Rascals can just begin exploring by going wherever the descriptions are intriguing. It's a fun trip, but don't let the Treadleonian approach to life fool you· if you are interested in using treadle and hand crank sewing machines, Treadleonia is the depository of one of the most extensive bodies of general information on this subject anywhere on the web·. Oh, yes· there are dangers as well· "Here there be dragons!" and all that· Stay on the paths. This old Treadleonian saying will stand you in good stead, remember it: "The pellet with the poison is in the vessel with the pestle. The chalice with the palace has the brew that is true!" Also, be aware that Treadleonia is located on a geological fault of the imagination, and is subject to very frequent imagination quakes. Just because you went somewhere safely yesterday, doesn't mean you can today· Sites come and go, contents change. Treadleonia is as much a process as a place.
Here is a helpful hint: As in any foreign land, knowledge of local customs is important. You will be given some local currency if you enter legally at the Embassy. You are advised to make your next stop the library·
Ye Map of Treadleonia & Key
Certain principal sites shown on the map now have pages linked to the main index page. These pages are included on this key, but unless otherwise noted when you get there, provide the same access that is obtained from the Index. The thought occurred to alphabetize the list, but we don't really like to organize things much in Treadleonia. Instead, your trip starts down at the end of the spit at Land's End in the southwest corner of the map, takes you over to the southeast, then north, then west and then south again down the west coast. Just wander and enjoy, but do be careful·

Key to Points on Map

Drive-In Movie and Flea Market - This link shows the old Treadleonia Drive-In Movie, now closed. It survived for a few year by being the site of the weekend TO Flea Market, but closed when that moved to a new site. The Drive-In is kept as it was for it final nite... featuring a marthon showing of movies of interest to Treadleonians. Haunted House - Condemned! Keep Out! Future renovations planned. Quilt Shop - Links to the TO Quilt Shop and sewing project center. Same link as on the Main Index Page. Soap Factory - Time was when Treadleonia had it's own radio station, KTRED. One of its most popular features was "Romance in the Afternoon" (more commonly called "Lust in the Rust"), a continuing soap opera about the lives and loves of sewing machines, and later, teddy bears. The station is closed now, but the first four installments of RITA have been posted. The entire script can purchased from Treadlon Publications. KTRED also did newscasts. This link will take you to a sampling of RITA and the newscasts. The Dunes - A popular tourist area and origin of one of Treadleonia's best known legends. University of Treadleonia - The center of Treadleonian education. The University's Library, located near the campus, is the principal repository of our national history and culture. Olde Treadleonia - This isn't a link... it's where you are, silly. Embassy - The basic entry point of Treadleonia... where you go to become a citizen. Same link as "Joining" on the Main Index Page. Oil and Tar Pits - Best avoided. Onion Fields - The source of Treadleonia's main crop. Part time work is commonly available. Graham Fors' Dyke - Not a link, but worth noting on the map, since it is quite an engineering feat, and without it, there would be no Onion Fields. Wood Shop - Instructions on woodworking issues related to sewing machines. Same link as on Main Index Page. Ocean of Opportunity - Not a link, but of important historical significance. This is the ocean that the first settlers, under the direction of The First Captain, had to cross... Carter Bays - Again, not a link, but a heck of a good picnic spot. Enchanted Cottage - Headquarters for the Treadleonian Storytellers Assn. Another historical presentation by the University of Treadleonia, the Cottage features a small collection of stories by Captain Dick. The Castle - Home of The Captain. At this time, it shows the castle itself, ancestral home of The Captains, since Treadleonia began. Personal information about The Captain and his activities can be found through the link "Personal Pages" on the Main Index Page. Railroad Station - Platform 9 3/4 - This was once the entrance to the Treadleonian railway system. Treadleonia had an extensive rail system (and web site). In order to avoid local taxes, the trains actually ran in a parallel universe called "Ballard" and the system was called the Ballard Southern Rail Road, or the "BS" for short. You could board and leave Treadleonian trains at Platform 9 3/4, on a schedule that alternated with the Hogwarts Express. When boarding, you simply imagined yourself at the Ballard terminal and that was where you got out when the train stoppped. When returning, you boarded at Platform 9 7/8 in Ballard and imagined the stop you wanted in Treadleonia and the train would take you there. A visit to the Ballard Southern included the opportunity to read The Captain's doctoral thesis in ferro-equinology. Unfortunately, the BS has been in receivership for some time and no longer runs. Work is ongoing to try to re-establish it as at least a local shortline.

The Kite Field - Treadleonians, especially bears, love to fly kites. At the Royal Kite Field you will see some of The Captain's kites and some of the training activities of the Rainbear Skydive Corps. dremls' Cave - Not a link. To be honest, it isn't on the map. No one has ever found it! People who look for it tend to get lost... You can learn more about dremls by going to The University. Wizard's Apothecary Shop - This is the home of the mysterious Wizard of Treadleonia, who has an affinity for rebellious teenagers, who like to hang out here. Royal Bulletin Board - Find out what's happening in Treadleonia. Same link as on the Main Index Page. Captain Dick Bay - Great place to go sailing or picnicking on nice afternoons. Bookstore - Headquarters and distribution point for Treadle On Publications. Same link as on the Main Index Page. Royal Marina & Fishing Pier - Sailing is a big activity in Treadleonia, since everyone got there over the ocean in the first place. The Captain especially has a long history of sailing. Visit the Royal Marina and see some of his boats. Ristorante - Knows as the finest dining spot in Treadleonia, the menu includes many of the favorite Treadleonian recipes. (Note: in terms of the map above, this was formerly The Espresso Shop, connected to the Bookstore. University - A Treadleonian center of learning, where can be found the Library, the department of resource & environmental management liaison, the National Museum and the Institute of Philosophy. Golf Course - This was, of course, our Links page. Since the currency of links is hard to maintain, the golf course has been closed. However, club members may still dine at the Ristorante. Cave of Mysteries - It is said that mystery quilts used to be found here, but it was, and still is, a very dangerous place to go. Swamp of Tension - Another spot best avoided. Here There Be Dragons Mountains - The Dragon plays a key role in Treadleonian mythology (which isn't so 'mythical' around here...). He is the Enforcer of the Treadleonian Oath and the Keeper of the Orb (though that's another story for another time). Within his Cave of Mystery lies the secret of the Treadle On Mystery Quilt. He will allow you to learn the secret of the Mystery Quilt, but only if you are very brave and willing to expore the mountains. Bears Den - In a major national plebiscite, it was officially voted that teddy bears be allowed to assume the full rights of citizenship along with humans, sewing machines and fantasy creatures. You can visit the bears... but but you'd better hope they're in a mood to receive guests. The Edge of the World - Source of another of the major Treadleonian legends. Sunbonnet Sue's House - Sunbonnet Sue is beloved of many quilters. Few realize that she lives here in Treadleonia and had an important role in one of our first ambitious group projects. Sue is a very attactive young lady, and there is some question as to her relationship with The Captain, who seems to spend an undue amount of time traveling with her. Needle's Point - best avoided. The Dogs - Knots are a part of seamanship... and snarls a part of sewing...
