Mystery Quilt I

"Survivor - Rectangle Island"

Step 5

OK... I hope you're ready for something tough... Now you have to sew on the longer strips :^)

What you're going to do is lay one of the 7 1/2" strips onto the print side of one of the units you just finished and sew it on with a 1/4" seam. However, there is a catch... literally...

This is a view of the back of the sewn unit. You can see that these seams, which will be under the piece you're sewing, can be a problem... the first seam will flow naturally under the presser foot. The second seam, though, will tend to unfold backwards, away from the printed square. This will make a nasty lump.

Now, here's the solution to the problem... actually, two solutions... take your pick.

First: If your machine works smoothly and the bed is smooth, you can see if your fingers are sensitive enough to feel the feed process, lefit the work slightly as the second seam crosses onto the bed, and maybe again if your presser foot plate is slightly raised. If you study the pictures above, you can see that the presser foot plate on my machine is raised. However, the machine runs very smoothly, the treadle is well tuned, and I really hand very little trouble using this technique. I think when I was done I had only two slight foldovers of the seam.

Second: This is a little more trouble but is a more certain technique. Place the strip on the front as in the first photo above. Then turn the work over and stitch from the back, so that you can see and control the seams as they pass under the presser foot.

Use either technique, as fits your comfort zone, and complete sewing all of the strips onto your color block units. Once finished with that, you will need to press the finished units again.

This time, you will press the seams outward, toward the light side. This keeps the thickness at the corners of the color square at a minimum.

And again, I press the top as well as the bottom...

There you are... 36, or more, finished blocks!

Congratulations...
