Mystery Quilt I
"Survivor - Rectangle Island"
Step 6 - Path A
At this point, you have built a set of 7 1/2" square blocks. For the Path A version of this quilt, from the rest of your fat quarter or print fabric, cut 40 blocks 7 1/2" square. That's right, just cut them out... no sewing required. You are now done cutting and can proceed to quilt layout by arranging the sewn blocks and the solid blocks in a checkerboard effect, as below:
7 1/2" solid blocks

Path A verision of the quilt will look like this, alternating sewn blockx and solid blocks. Note layout... 8 blocks across by 9 blocks vertical. To border or not to border is an issue we'll deal with later. |
This is a little closer view. This was a quick, rough layout so I could get a picture and post this instruction. I noticed an error as soon as i inserted the picture. If you study carefully, you will see that it is intended that all of the white sashing blocks be set in with the longer sash vertical. However, there is one block, at about 3 o'clock half way up, that is in wrong... it's long sashes are horizontal. It's a good idea to study your layout and make sure you don't have any of this. Also, look at your color distribution. Sometimes a scrap quilt's appearance can be thrown off by having three blocks of the same color get too close. Stand back and look at it, then go away, then look again. If you have a color prism, look at it through that. If not, take a digital picture and look at it on screen.

Once your are satisfied with your layout, start at the upper left corner and pick up the first block in that row. Turn it upside down. Take the second block and turn it upside down on top of the first block... the the third block, etc. until you have all 8 blocks of that row in a stack. Now pin or clip them together with a piece of paper on top that says, "Row 1". Do the same with the remaining rows.
At this point you are ready to for the clue to Clue to Step 8... where you will rejoin the group that opts for Path B. They will have completed Step 6B, their cutting and sewing of the alternate for the solid blocks you just cut. This is a bit confusing, but because of the way Step 6 split up into two options, there is no Step 7. Step 6B would have been Step 7, but renaming the file would have meant having to re-enter the pictures and I didn't feel like it. So there! Again, there is no Step 7. Both the 6A people and the 6B people will meet up again at Step 8.
ET, give them the clue to Step 8...
