Finished 2006 Mystery Quilts

Here are the patterns Igave everyone... First Ann's needlepoints that inspired the project:

Then the finished pilot that I used for posting the instructions...... unfortunately not finished (Slap!... Ouch! Bad Captain!)

Here is a set of pictures sent by Alice D:

Hi Captain, Here are my pictures, the first part of the mystery is not finished yet, just have not had the time to get it done, I've included pictures of how far I am on it though. I'm debating about whether to do stems on the flowers, in a darker green than used in the quilt then maybe use that same green to do a border with....

Thank you for putting this together for us, I like the way the appliqué worked all except I used 'wonder under' and it was so thin and when I turned my pieces inside out it tore in places real close to the edge. I saw in your pictures the fusible stuff you used was thicker, do you have any recommendations on brands? (NO... I threw away the wrapping on mine and don't know what it is)

Here's my machine, Wheeler and Wilson D-9 that I used (just dusted for the picture), the finished Challenge (upper left)  and the Mystery (not finished)

The challenge one I made was small, finished size of rectangles are 2 inches wide, going to use it for a treadle topper.

As always I had help, That's Gunther's hand helping to sew the cardinal down. I drew the shape out on paper, pinned that down on top of the red and sewed along those lines, was easier to get the shape I wanted than to draw on the fabric. Paper tears away and Viola!

While wondering what to do for my challenge appliqué, there were cardinals out the window and I thought the colors you picked for the appliqué would work well, I did not do the appliqué like you did on the challenge though cause it was going to be so small and the 'wonder under' I was using tore so badly with the smaller pieces, I did raw edge and am hoping that with a few washes that it will fuzz a little on the edges to give depth.

This project was a "challenge" in more ways than one, Gunther was having a hissy fit cause I was not letting him have his way! He sure does like that bird and he kept telling me it was "MINE!!!"
(I have to give credit here to the photographer, Giovanni, he's 3, that's why the picture is a little blurry. If you want to see all the ones he took of my feet then just let me know, aren't digital cameras great, you can delete the really bad ones!)

Ta Da the Challenge is finished and ready to be used as a treadle topper... or a small security blanket for Gunther since he's still telling me "MY BIRD!!"

Treadle Annie's Quilts

Hi Captain,

Just finished your Mystery 2006 quilt # 1 and thought you might like to see it? Made lots of color mistakes in it...I wouldn't have used some of the darker colors, if I did it again...too much contrast. I'm calling this first attempt......"Captain's Purple Pansys" <smile>

I'm working with a new camera, so the pics aren't up-to-par. The "detail pickie is kind of blurry.

Maybe this will brighten your day, to see we're working on the mystery?

Hi Captain,

Just thought you might like to see the quilt I came up with, from your TO Mystery Quilt #2 challenge. Haven't decided on what to do with the applique, yet & no border either .... it's still a WIP. I started out with two 12" squares in beige & went from there, using a bunch of 1 1/2" strips....2 purples, 2 greens, & a red.

See picture below....any ideas for the applique?

Sooooooooooo much fun, Captain! Thanks for getting us started on this.

Hi Captain
Here are the pictures of my mystery quilts. I just wanted to say thank you for doing this. I've never done anything like this before and I really enjoyed it. I thought your directions were clear even if I didn't follow them to a T. LOL! I was in the middle of the 1st one - had the top pieced and was working on the appliqué when I got an invite to my neices baby shower. I set the 1st one aside and quickly went to work on the baby quilt. I only had two weeks to get it done so the only changes I made were to the width of the blocks (reduced by one inch) and the length (shortened by three inches) so I ended up with 36x45. When I got back to the original quilt I just couldn't do the pansies. Hope you will forgive me.
I pieced and quilted the 1st on on my 1900 Standard Rotary and the baby quilt well..... I pieced it on my 1910 Franklin then cheated and appliquéd it with my electric zig zag. I know! Shame on me! And the stitches will rot out! I've learned my lesson because when I went to quilt on the Franklin it absolutely would not quilt. I finally gave up and quilted it on the Standard. still don't know whats wrong with the Franklin. Perhaps one day it will forgive me.
Any way that's my story and once again THANK YOU! for the Mystery quilt and all that you do.

Captain's Note: These are a real good example of the versatility of this simple design concept. Above you have a great baby quilt. Below, by using traditional flower patterns that might be found on a good Baltimore quilt, the design suddenly becomes "classy", but is still pretty fast to do.
