Treadle On 1999 Summer Mystery Quilt
Part Three
To review, at this point, you should have at least 24 sewn together strip sets made up of Fabrics 2 and 3. These strip sets should measure at least 3 1/2" wide (wider if you are going to cut them to size later÷). The seams should be ironed toward the medium Fabric 2, which should be on the left side of each set of strips.
Next Step
Cut each strip into 3 1/2" squares (or 4" if you are cutting oversize). But whatever size, the important thing is to make squares. For the total projected quilt you will need 280 of these squares. This includes a 10% overage to allow for mistakes, uneven cuts, etc. (But I would be inclined to cut 300, just because!)

To the left you that I have trimmed the end off of a strip set, getting ready to cut my Fabric 2-3 squares. This eliminates the selvage. Never leave the selvage edges in any piece of your quilt. They are not woven the same as the rest of the fabric and will result in a spot in your quilt that looks odd. Not shown, I will rotate the cutting board, so that again I am cutting to the right of the ruler. To the right you see a batch of the cut units that result from this step. Below is another, shown close up.
