"The Field Guide to the Identification of Early Singers"
This page features information on "The Field Guide to the Identification of Early Singers", which has become a primary tool for collectors, as well as pictures of many standard model Singers. These are the machines made from roughly 1870 to 1960 that show up commonly in local sales and antique shops.
The Guide is back!
Yes, the "Field Guide to the Recognition of Early Singers"... the handy, purse size recognition manual for vintage Singers that has proven so popular with collectors, is back in print! The first edition of this little book sold out two printings. Now, a new Second Edition, twice as big, has been printed and is in hand, ready to mail.
The basic nature of the book remains unchanged. It is a narrative description and chart of the key recognition features of the major Singer models. There has been expansion of coverage of a few of the less common models, as well as expansion of the entries of some others, based on additional knowledge gained since the first book came out. Coverage has been extended forward a few years with some comment on the 400 and 500 series.
As before, there are no photos. The idea is to keep it from becoming a big book that's hard to carry around and that costs too much. Many collectors have a copy of the guide in their purse, a copy in the car, and have
supplied copies to husbands, friends or family members who "keep an eye out" for machines for them. Others have worn theirs out and have been eagerly awaiting the new edition. If you want to know the value of this book, just ask on the lists... lots of delighted users will be happy to tell you!
Cost of the Guide is $13 in the U.S, $15 Canada and $17 overseas. This includes postage and handling. Foreign sales in checks or money orders plainly indicating payment in U.S. funds only, please. It costs me more to convert foreign currency than the price of the book! Make checks payable to "Dick Wightman" at the address below.
