A Treadle ON Beginner's Quilting Instruction Book

Several years back I needed a nice little beginner's quilting book to use as the basis for a class I was teaching. I decided to write it from a guy's viewpoint, though the observations were equally valid to typical beginning quilters. I couldn't afford to self-publish in the slick paper format common to quilt books, so I had a small run printed by photocopy, but with a nice job and several color pages. Lo and behold, it sold out and was out of print for awhile. Since then, it has gone through about five printing runs. The name changed several times. The original name was "Quilting... It's a Guy Thing". Some ladies said that wasn't a good title, so it became "The Treadle On Beginner Quilting Book". That seemed too long, and so it got named for the pattern inside, "Captain Dick's Treasure". It's all the same book... a really clear explanation of how to approach quilting and make a beautiful quilt that is really quite simple. The basic pattern is amenable to numerous variations, which are covered in the book, so you can actually make many quilts from this book. The book is plastic bound, runs just over 50 pages and, while not glossy and beautiful, the content has had good approval from those who have used it. It is available for $18, US postage included. If you order the book and are not satisfied that it is a fair value, return it in the same condition as when sent and I will refund your full price.

These are pictures of quilts made from the book, which is aimed at beginners (and quilters in a hurry!). Some were made by me and two were gifts from kind friends who had draft copies of the book for review. More on the book itself can be found below the quilt pictures.

"Captain Dick's Treasure"… this is the random 16 patch that is the beginner quilt in the book. Other variations are based on more structured 25 patch blocks, with and without sashing.

Delft Blue variation… this is one of the more complex pattern variations offered, but is certainly effective. The new edition offers several additional variations in this theme

Dark and Light Variation… this shows one block of a dark and light variation, also made as a theme quilt. Here, 8 fabrics, all related to fishing, have been used in a checkerboard, using both mediums and darks as the darks, and giving a bit of a random effect in addition to the checkerboard

This is a variation I call "Captain Dick's Phony Irish Chain"… it presents somewhat the same effect as that traditional pattern. However, watch what happens when you let the color take over from the pattern, as in the next picture… The new edition offers an expanded design variation new version that makes the chain effect a stronger element.

Amish Quilt top, pieced on the Necchi treadle. This is the pattern I call in the book "Captain Dick's Phony Irish Chain". However, the color choices here have turned it into a totally different quilt, with nine patches alternating with four and six patches that appear as sollid blocks. The Irish Chain effect has disappeared.
