The Book Store
(Treadle On Publications)
I spent a good deal of my working life writing and teaching classes. It seems natural for me to put my projects into book form, and I offer them here as they are available.
Sales of these products support the continued availability of Treadleonia as a no-charge site and list.
Paying for Treadle On publications:
You may pay for Treadle On publications by personal check or money order, or by Pay Pal.
Checks should be made out to "Dick Wightman" and sent to: 10527 12th Ave. NW, Seattle, WA 98177
We do accept Pay Pal payments, though we aren't set up with nice click icons and a shopping cart. Here's how you do it:
Using an ancient technology called "paper and pencil", make a list of the TO items you want to order. Then, get out your abacus and add up the prices to get a total. Next, go to the Pay Pal web site and log in as you normally do. Once there, select "Send Money". It will ask for the email address of whomever you want to send the money to. Enter my email address: rwightman@mindspring.com . Next it will ask you how much money you want to send. Enter the total of your order. There will be a box titled "Notes", into which you can type comments. Enter the list of items you want, the total cost, and your address. This will come to me and tell me what to send and where to. Finally, Pay Pal will ask you how you want to pay, and you can follow your usual procedure to pay by credit card or from your Pay Pal account.
If you like, you can also send me a direct email telling me what you are ordering, as a backup to the Pay Pal comment block, but it's probably not necessary.
(The links will take you to specific pages with further information on each item.)
Official Treadle On Bumper Stickers - Available at last! You asked for them and now they're here... The official Treadleon On vinyl bumper stickers! Put one on your car and another on the sewing machine case you take to classes. Let people know you're an Onion! Bumper stickers are $5 for one, $8 for two or $10 for three. For shipment outside the US, and additional $1 would be appreciated. These are small stickers (3" x 6"), so they won't look ugly on your car, but they'll let folks know you are into antique sewing machines. The back will stick to any flat surface or you can put them on the inside of a window with a couple of dots of silicone cement. Include a small SASE with your order. One stamp for one or two stickers or two stamps for three.

"Field Guide to Identification of Early Singers" - This guide is an aid to identifying the old Singer sewing machines you find in local sales. It has become virtually a standard for active machine collectors and is in its third printing. The Guide is $13 in the U.S., postage included, $15 to Canada and $17 outside of North America. It is available to dealers wholesale.
"Captain Dick's Treasure" or "Quilting
for Beginners" - (Originally marketed as "Quilting... It's
a Guy Thing") This is a good basic quilting book for beginners. It features
an attractive but easy and quick pattern, followed by increasingly complex variations
of that basic pattern. It is written from a guy's viewpoint, which makes it
a little different. I have used it as the basis for classes and it has proven
both successful and popular. It's great for either beginners or just quilters
who want an easy, fast project. "Quilting for Beginnrs" is $18, postage
included in USA. Unfortunately, with postage increases here, postage outside
the US is higher... $2 additional for Canada and $5 additional for Europe..
"Romance in the Afternoon" - Sometimes knows as "Lust in the Rust", this was a continuing soap opera feature of Treadle On in its early days. The complete script of 18 months of programs is available for $12 in the US, $13 Canada, $15 Europe. It's hard to describe this show, as all of the characters were sewing machines! You can get a sampling of it by clicking on the title link.
"Overhauling Treadles" DVD - One of the most popular lecture/demonstrations programs I have developed is my demonstration of how I go about the basic restoration of a treadle sewing machine. This program covers removing the cabinet from the treadle frame, disassembly of the treadle... re-assembly, including adjustment of those tricky cone bearings... and treatment of the cabinet wood to preserve it and restore the color.
I have done this demonstration at numerjous Treadle On TOGA's. It includes use of special tools and restorative products. At the Florida TOGA in February of 1999, the entire demonstration was videotaped. Along with the demo, some coverage of the TOGA doings got included... such as playing Treadleonian Shuffleboard, dancing the Cranky Treadle (national folk dance of Treadlelonia) and the singing of the Treadleonian national anthem. The original videotape has now been put on a DVD, which runs 90 minutes. While it is clearly home video quality, it's loads of fun and the informative content is very high.
Cost is $23, including postage and handling, which includes case, protective packaging and mailing. $2 additional for Canada and $5 additional for Europe

"Rainbear Sky Dive Corps Training Manual" - ( OUT OF PRINT) This is a manual on the construction of power lifting kites and skydiving equipment for teddy bears. It is the most complete compendium of information yet compiled in this area. Covers design and construction of parachutes, design, structure and complete sewing instructions for the Fluted Sled kite, and design of various lifting and release mechanisms to get the bears up to the kites so they can jump. If you are not familiar with teddy bear sky diving, you can get an idea by using the title link to go to The Kite Field. "The Rainbear Skydive Corps Training Manual" is $18, postage included.
dreml Patterns - The dreml is one of Treadleonia's native species, and is a most curious creature. You can learn about dremls by accessing the department of resource management & environmental liaison. From time to time Treadleon Publications makes dreml sewing patterns available. Fortunately, this is one of those times. I had a batch of patterns printed up to take to a recent TOGA for teaching a class, and there are some left. Patterns and instructions for making dremls are $10, postage included and can be ordered from the address below. I only print a batch of these about once a year, so they are sometimes out of print for quite awhile. Occassionally pre-cut dreml kits may be available on the Treadle On Flea Market.
Axehead Quilt Pattern Instructions and Template -
|
|
Some years back I decided to tackle this very beautiful but difficult traditional pattern. I didn't like any of the few commercially available variations as they had templates producing a piece that was too small and gently curved (in my opinion) to be considered an "Axehead". That might be why they called it an "Applecore" instead. Anyway, I tried to develop a larger version with more pronounced curves and found out that the math/engineering involved was even trickier than the quilt. Fortunately, my wife is way more capable in that area than i am, and she succeeded where I had failed. I had the templates factory made and they sold out quickly. Due to demand, I followed up with a batch of hand made ones, but they, too, quickly ran out. Now I've made a supply ahead and the set is available again. Cost is $20, postage included. $2 additional for Canada and $5 additional for Europe
